Caffeine pouches vs energy drinks vs coffee
The same caffeine, three ways to take it. This page puts a PAX pouch next to a cup of coffee and a can of energy drink on the four things that actually differ: how much caffeine, how much sugar, what it costs per serve, and what you have to carry. Prices and figures were read on 11 September 2026 and the method is at the foot of the page.
PAX is caffeine. There is no nicotine in it and there never will be. We make PAX, so wherever a coffee or a can beats a pouch, this page says so.
How much caffeine is in a pouch, a coffee and an energy drink?
A PAX pouch is 100mg, and so is a caffeine tablet. A cup of instant coffee is about 80mg and a 250ml energy drink is capped at 80mg. Two run higher: a cafe coffee, at 95mg to 200mg, and a 500ml can, at up to 160mg, more than a pouch and a half. Caffeine is caffeine, whichever way it arrives.
| Serve | Caffeine |
|---|---|
| One PAX pouch | 100mg |
| Instant coffee, one cup (FSANZ figure) | about 80mg |
| Brewed or espresso based cafe coffee | about 95mg to 200mg |
| Red Bull, 250ml can (its own figure) | 80mg |
| V, 250ml can | up to 80mg, the most a can that size may contain |
| Monster, 500ml can | up to 160mg, the most a can that size may contain |
| No-Doz caffeine tablet | 100mg |
New Zealand's food standard for formulated caffeinated beverages, which is what an energy drink is in law, caps them at 32mg of caffeine per 100ml, so a 250ml can holds at most 80mg and a 500ml can at most 160mg. Red Bull prints its 80mg. V and Monster do not publish the figure on the retailer pages we read, so the table gives the cap, not a guess.
A pouch is not faster than a coffee or an energy drink. The only study that put caffeine through the mouth head to head against both used a mouth spray, which gives up its dose faster than a pouch does, and it was no quicker than either. That is covered properly on our caffeine pouches: myths and facts page.
How much sugar is in each?
A PAX pouch has 0 sugar and 0 calories, so there is no sugar crash. That is the only crash claim we make, because a pouch is still caffeine.
| Serve | Sugar |
|---|---|
| One PAX pouch | 0g |
| Coffee, black | 0g. Milk and sugar are yours to add |
| Red Bull, 250ml can | 27g |
| Monster, 500ml can | 57g |
| V Zero Sugar, Red Bull Sugarfree, Monster Zero Sugar | 0g |
That last row matters. If sugar is the only thing you want rid of, you do not need a pouch: Red Bull, V and Monster all sell a sugar-free can. What a sugar-free can still gives you is 250ml or 500ml of liquid to carry and to drink.
What does each cost per serve?
A pouch is the cheapest caffeine on this page other than a caffeine tablet, and cheaper than anything you buy ready to drink. A takeaway coffee is the dearest by a long way. Instant coffee you make at home is cheaper than all of it. Like for like: one pouch against one bought coffee, one pouch against one 250ml can. The caffeine is not identical (a pouch is 100mg, a can is 80mg, a cafe coffee can be double a pouch), and the table in the first section is there so you can see the difference.

| PAX, six-tin subscription | 46c a pouch | this site, $9.15 a tin |
| No-Doz tablet | 32c | Chemist Warehouse, 100 for $31.99 |
| Red Bull 250ml, in a four-pack | $1.87 | PAK'nSAVE, $7.49 a pack |

| Red Bull 250ml, single can | $2.29 | PAK'nSAVE |

| Takeaway coffee, average | $5.20 | Stats NZ, March 2026 |
Two honest notes on that table. We did not price a dairy or a service station, so treat the can prices as the supermarket end. And instant coffee made at home beats everything here on price; the comparison that matters is against the coffee you buy.
Over a month, based on two a day (200mg, half the daily ceiling): two PAX pouches a day is $44.70 at the single-tin price, or $30.90 on the three-tin monthly subscription at $10.30 a tin. Two Red Bulls a day is about $112 bought in four-packs, or about $137 as single cans. Two takeaway coffees a day at the Stats NZ average is about $312.
Which is the most convenient?
The pouch, unless you also wanted a drink. A tin of 20 goes in a pocket. A pouch sits between your lip and gum, so there is no cup, no can, no queue and nothing to spill on a site, in a ute or at a desk. Do not chew it and do not swallow it. We keep ours in for 20 to 30 minutes and take them out when the flavour goes.
What you give up is real, too. A pouch does nothing for thirst. There is no hot drink to hold and no ritual of making one. It sits in your mouth, which some people never take to, and there is a mild tingle when you first put one in. If the drink was the point, a pouch will not replace it. If the caffeine was the point, it will.
What changes if you switch to pouches, and what does not?
The caffeine does not change. The sugar, the liquid and the price do. We are not going to tell you a pouch is better for you, because that is not a claim we can stand behind. Here is the honest split.
The same: 100mg of caffeine is 100mg of caffeine. The 400mg a day ceiling applies to all of it. Caffeine can cause dependence in any form, and a coffee at 4pm and a pouch at 4pm are the same problem for sleep.
Different: no sugar and no calories in a pouch, against 27g in a 250ml Red Bull or 57g in a 500ml Monster. Under half a gram of pouch against 250ml or 500ml of liquid. Less than a dollar a serve against $1.87 to $5.20.
Unknown: what a pouch does to your gums over years. Nobody has studied it, we say so plainly on the myths and facts page, and a coffee carries no such question.
How many a day is too many?
More than 400mg of caffeine a day from all sources, whatever it comes in. That is FSANZ's ceiling for healthy adults, and it is why the PAX tin says no more than four pouches a day.
| 400mg looks like | How many |
|---|---|
| PAX pouches | four |
| Instant coffees | five |
| Cafe coffees | two to four |
| 250ml energy drinks, at the cap | five |
| 500ml Monsters, at the cap | two and a half |
They add up across the day. Two pouches, a flat white and a can can put you over the line. One pouch per serving. PAX is for adults 18 and over. It is not for you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are sensitive to caffeine. PAX contains caffeine, and too much caffeine can cause an accelerated heart rate, nervousness, irritability and trouble sleeping.
How did we work this out?
Every figure on this page is either printed by the maker, us included, published by a regulator, or read off a New Zealand shelf on 11 September 2026. Red Bull's caffeine and sugar are from its own New Zealand site. Monster's sugar is from the nutrition panel on PAK'nSAVE's and New World's product pages, and the sugar-free cans are on each brand's own site. The caffeine cap for energy drinks is Standard 2.6.4 of the Food Standards Code, 320mg a litre, as stated on FSANZ's caffeine page, which is also where the instant coffee figure comes from. The brewed coffee range is Healthify NZ's. The takeaway coffee price is Stats NZ's average for March 2026, $5.20, as reported by RNZ. Can prices are PAK'nSAVE's and The Warehouse's online prices on the day. The tablet is No-Doz at Chemist Warehouse. PAX prices and the pouch weight are ours.
Per-serve prices divide the pack price by the number of serves and round to the cent. The monthly figures assume two serves a day for thirty days. For how PAX compares with the other caffeine pouches sold in New Zealand, see every brand compared.
