Caffeine pouches vs nicotine pouches
Same tin, same slim bag, same spot under the lip, and a completely different thing inside. This page is for anyone who has picked up a caffeine pouch and wondered whether it is a nicotine pouch, or the other way round.
PAX is caffeine. There is no nicotine in it and there never will be, and the company behind it has no nicotine or vape business of any kind.
What is the difference between a caffeine pouch and a nicotine pouch?
The active ingredient. A caffeine pouch delivers caffeine, the same substance as in a coffee. A nicotine pouch delivers nicotine, the same substance as in a cigarette or a vape. What is the same is the format, not what is in it.
Both are a small bag of plant fibre and flavour that sits between your lip and gum. Both come in a round tin. Both are used the same way. The pouch is only a way of carrying something, the way a bottle carries water, and what it carries is the whole difference.
Do caffeine pouches contain nicotine?
No. A caffeine pouch contains caffeine. PAX contains 100mg of caffeine per pouch, no nicotine and no tobacco.
One thing worth knowing when you compare brands. At least one brand on the New Zealand shelf sells both a nicotine line and a caffeine line under the same name in other markets, and several caffeine pouches sold here are made by companies that also make nicotine pouches. Why do caffeine pouches and nicotine pouches look the same?
Because caffeine pouches copied the format, and in many cases the same companies make both. The tin, the bag and the under-the-lip habit all came from nicotine pouches, which came from Swedish snus.
The shape will not tell you which one you are holding. The front of the tin will, and that is what the next section is about.
How do you tell which one you are holding?
Read the front of the tin for the word and the number.
A caffeine pouch tin says caffeine and gives a figure in milligrams per pouch. PAX says 100mg. A nicotine pouch tin says nicotine and gives a figure in milligrams too. ZYN's UK range, for example, runs from 3mg to 16.5mg. The numbers are not comparable, because the substances are not.
The warnings tell you as well. A nicotine pouch tin carries a nicotine warning: ZYN's says it contains nicotine, which is addictive. A PAX tin says caffeine, one pouch per serving, no more than four a day, 18 and over, and not for pregnant or breastfeeding women or anyone sensitive to caffeine. PAX contains caffeine, and too much caffeine can cause an accelerated heart rate, nervousness, irritability and trouble sleeping.
One trap: a nicotine pouch tin sold overseas often says "tobacco-free". That does not mean nicotine-free. Tobacco-free nicotine pouches still contain nicotine.
What is in each pouch?
Both are a plant-fibre filler, flavour and sweetener in a small fabric bag. The difference is one ingredient.
A PAX pouch is 100mg of caffeine, a filler that is mostly microcrystalline cellulose (plant fibre), flavour and sweetener, in a bag of 80 percent viscose and 20 percent polyester. There is no glass in it, and every PAX tin names its flavour ingredients.
A nicotine pouch is nicotine, tobacco-derived or made in a lab, in the same kind of filler with flavour and sweetener. Researchers who have measured nicotine pouches have found them anywhere from about pH 7 to pH 10, with the alkaline ones made that way on purpose, because nicotine absorbs better that way. That is a nicotine design, and it is one more reason findings about nicotine pouches cannot simply be read across to a caffeine pouch.
Is caffeine as addictive as nicotine?
Both can cause dependence, and we are not going to rank them.
Caffeine dependence is real. Research has found that people who stop after regular daily use as low as 100mg, one PAX pouch, get symptoms, headache most often. That is true of coffee, tea and energy drinks in the same way, and we say so on every page where it matters.
Nicotine is addictive. Its own makers say so, on their sites and on their tins.
What we will not do is put a number on which is worse, because the honest comparative study is not something we have in hand, and a caffeine company is the wrong party to be making that call. PAX has nothing to do with nicotine, in the tin or in what it is for, and it is not sold as anything of the kind.
